How does a first time visitor go about getting an upgrade or comps? We are booking direct with the hotel, not through an agent.
Upgrades and comps
for comps: get a players card right when you arrive and use it every time you play. charge everything to your hotel room. ask to meet with a host right before you check out and they will see if they can take anything off your bill (aka comp)
for upgrade: slip $20 between your ID and credit card when checking in and ask the agent if they have any complimentary upgrades available.
Upgrades and comps
You can get an upgrade by asking at check-in. If anything is available they will let you know the cost for the upgrade, or sometimes give it for free if you ask nicely.
It helps to know what you%26#39;re asking for. A particular room type or suite type.
';Comps'; are given based on your level of play. If you do a search for ';comps'; on the forum you%26#39;ll see all the information you need.
';for upgrade: slip $20 between your ID and credit card when checking in and ask the agent if they have any complimentary upgrades available.';
Please don%26#39;t pass this information around like it%26#39;s a foregone conclusion that it will work. Maybe it will work, maybe it won%26#39;t. Impossible to determine if the outcome would be any different if you just asked nicely.
Don%26#39;t worry about hosts. If your level of play warrants one then they%26#39;ll generally find you. Just ask at the players club desk before you check out to see if you%26#39;re due any comps. Remember NEVER play with comps in mind, gamble what you can afford to lose and treat any comps as a bonus.
I wouldn%26#39;t get involved with the '; $20 trick'; either. Just use your polite Scottish charm and ask nicely if any free upgrades are available. Expect nothing and you won%26#39;t be disappointed if it%26#39;s a no. If you really want that better room then book and pay for it.
Thanks very much everyone, this really helps! Not really expecting freebies just would be nice to get a better room and maybe a few free drinks!!
';Free'; drinks are the one comp that you%26#39;re guaranteed when gambling irrespective of your level of play. Don%26#39;t forget to tip.... :-)
You should probably listen to mgg42 and blagger, they make good points and they have more experience and expertise in this area than I do.
I only know enough to go to Vegas 5-6 times a year fully comped, staying in suites and eating $1,000 meals at Bellagio and Wynn. And if you think I am a sucker blowing through my $1,000%26#39;s of dollars, I should let you know I started with a $300 bankroll in 1995 which is now up to over $200K.
Do get a plyers card but don%26#39;t waste your time looking for a host if your bankroll is in the hundreds.
Interesting post chickenfat. Sounds like you are living the dream.
Quick question: With all your fully comped stays and such, where do you see the $20 trick in action? I wouldn%26#39;t suspect a roller like you would be loitiering around the checkin, let alone trying it personally.
good question. I always tip $100 to the agent on check-in. This tip is made for multiple reasons:
1. I used to work for tips.
2. I am requesting a certain room (closer to center at Bellagio, closer to elevator at Wynn)
3. I am making a special request for an amenity to be delivered on arrival.
Interestingly at VIP check-in I have had the agent try to return the tip quite a few times.
I have been pretty lucky with 2 very large winning trips which have led to over 50% of my current bankroll. Without those I would be under six figures. Also a lot of times I will quit on a trip if I hit a big win even if I have a day or so left. If things are going poorly I generally maintain good dicipline at limiting my downside although I have had significant meltdowns.
