Las Vegas visit

We hope to visit Las Vegas later this year or early next year.

What is the temperature like in November/ December - or even February?

Any advice on Grand Canyon tours and hotels with a good position on the strip?

The last time we visited we stayed at the Luxor which was nice but quite a long way from everything.

Thanks

Las Vegas visit

We have visited in December and February. Weather was better in February, but best hotel rates in December, as long as it%26#39;s after the rodeo - after the 2nd week.

Even though the weather was better in February, it was fine in December, just need a jacket. It%26#39;s always a nice day in Happy Land!

Las Vegas visit

Cool days and chilly nights. Getting a little warmer in February but don%26#39;t expect pool weather.

Impossible to give hotel advice without the slightest clue about budget. How much per night are you looking to spend?

There is a website www.weather.com and they%26#39;ll have averages for the temps for the year.

I like Mirage because of it%26#39;s central location.

Thanks for the replies,

It seems now that we will probably be visiting mid November.

Just how cool is cool? Is it likely to still be sunny in November?

We were thinking of perhaps a 4 star hotel with decent rooms and a convenient position - not too pricey say around $100/ £150 per night(per room).

Any advice on Grand Canyon trips? South rim or West rim?...

Thanks again

pollylew

Did you mean £100/£150 or did you mean to put the $ sign by that 100? big diff in price between the two!

As Gabby said, a little clarification on your budget requirements is required! Be aware that weekends are WAY more expensive in Vegas. A room that%26#39;s say $99 per night on Sunday through Thursday can easily be $250-300 per night on Friday and Saturday.

Here%26#39;s a link to weather records and averages for November. Remember that these are just averages and apart from the hot summer months weather is never 100% guaranteed in Vegas. It can easily be a lot hotter or cooler than the average for any given day. Check a forecast as you%26#39;re about to pack.

weather.com/outlook/…

Regarding Grand Canyon, avoid the ';West Rim'; at all possible. See the South Rim at Grand Canyon National Park for a genuine Grand Canyon experience. Ideally you should spend a night there to fully experience the canyon in all its glory. I%26#39;m sure others will recommend companies to use.

Thanks again,

We will probably be staying for 7 nights and are aware that hotel rates differ from night to night so to avoid more confusion I%26#39;d say we are looking at weekday rates of around $100/150 per room per night and weekend rates around $250. I wasn%26#39;t thinking about the Bellagio or similar because that would be too expensive - but a good quality hotel in the middle of the strip would be fine.

We will visit the South rim - possibly the helicopter tour, but were also wondering about the skywalk - would that be worth a visit?

Any advice on shows etc - we are two older (60+) but very young at heart couples.

we went in june this year and booked direct on the internet for the venetian and got brilliant rates so I would check out all the websites (we paid $189 avaerage a night)we also did a helicopter to canyon with maverick which was brilliant but if you want to do a sunset flight might be worth booking as soon as you arrive or before you go as these sell out very quickly. we also did phantom as my hubbie as never seen but they are completely different to what we have in london but was really good. hope you have a good trip

Thanks everyone

Any ideas for ';must do'; activities... during our 7 day visit?

Hello Pollylou, we are also both 63 (going on 16!) went to Vegas 6 years ago for 5 days, but realized it was not long enough, so guess what?.we are off again in 47 days for 16 days at Signature. I believe this is a very popular hotel with UK people. We love the idea it has a balcony. Not sure you will have time, but we booked for an overnight stay at Holiday Inn express near the Canyon South Rim. It was very very reasonable and includes a continetal breakfast. Have a fab time give us a wave if you spot us we are there from 6th to the 22nd Nov. Ada (Gosport Hampshire UK)

October Promotional Deals on the Strip

So here%26#39;s the deal. My friends and I are going to Vegas from Oct 23-Oct 26th and we booked a room at the stratosphere. But I realized that the Startosphere is way up the strip and we would rather stay st the cener strip. Good thing is the reservation we got with them is refundable.

Does anybody know of any good promotional deals for the Mirage or Flamingo for October? I found some but they don%26#39;t apply for the weekend and the price for that weekend is up the roof (our deal at the Stratosphere for 4 people came out to $392 total). Or is the startosphere a good hotel and should we just stay there? Thanks any advice is helpful! (f.y.i. we%26#39;re going for my 21st bday and it%26#39;s our last year in college hence the price issue)

October Promotional Deals on the Strip

Take a look at this site for some promotional deals.

October Promotional Deals on the Strip

also check travelzoo.com

The Golden Nugget is running a end of summer promo I put your dates in and the price is $327. In addition you get a coupon book with freebees( 2 for 1 buffets). You really can%26#39;t compare the GN to the Stratosphere. The GN is so superior.

Nightclubs in Vegas for 30+

My wife and I are in our mid-thirties and looking for nightclubs in Vegas where we won%26#39;t look too old. I will appreciate any responses.

Nightclubs in Vegas for 30+

If you%26#39;re willing to pay for a table with bottle service - which seems to run up to $1000 or more - most any club will welcome you with open arms.

However, if you would prefer to skip long lines and the obligatory ambivalent door staff, then consider these options:

Carnaval Court @ Harrah%26#39;s;

VooDoo Lounge @ Rio;

Polly Esther%26#39;s @ Stratosphere;

La Scena Lounge @ Venetian;

Fontana Lounge @ Bellagio;

Mix @ Mandalay Bay.

If those choices don%26#39;t appeal then check out jackcolton.com for more info about popular nightclubs and what to expect in general.

Nightclubs in Vegas for 30+

My husband and I are also in our mid-thirties and we like Voodoo.

If you want more of a bar scene, Carnival Court is fun.

Are those places nightclubs? I only consider places like Pure to be nightclubs.

Is Studio 54 still around? I have heard that they have more of a mixed clientele...

Yep, Studio 54 is still around at MGM.

the clubs at the hard rock are the only ones where you might feel old.

my girl and i are in our 30%26#39;s and just got back from pure, moon. lavo, ghostbar, etc. never felt old at all.

Flamingo slushy question

Last trip to Vegas, we hung out by the pool @ The Flamingo. My wife and I fell in love with their ';Slushies';. It was our first time for Slushies.

My question is, are they all the same, or are the ones at Flamingo the only ones like it? Can we get similiar flavors at the MGM?

thanks.

Flamingo slushy question

Fat Tuesdays in PH has AWESOME slushies. MMMM. The octane one is really good. Good prices too.

Flamingo slushy question

Whats ';PH';

Planet Hollywood

Fat Tuesdays is awesome. They are also at Caesars, MGM, and Stratosphere. Maybe elsewhere, but for sure at these locations. My guess is the flavors would be similar at these locations.

If you are near NY NY they have Coyote Ugly there that has a bar on the side you can buy slushy drinks from and they are really good too. Fat Tuesdays is my favorite though. They always have about a dozen or more different flavors, which you can sample before buying.

Quick question about Fat Tuesdays. If you get a refill, then it%26#39;s a discount right? So I still have my cup from about 3 months ago, if I bring it can I still use it?

Not to sound like a cheapskate but I can drink a lot of slushies!! :)

A word of warning to slushie consumers - always get a sample. Last year I got a mudslide downtown, took one sip and almost lost my rather expensive dinner from Golden Nugget. The entire thing went in the trash - wah!!

Karinsue - yeah, you should be ok with your old cup. Have a look at the ones displayed when you get there, to be sure they haven%26#39;t changed.

  • Deals in February - any out there yet, or when?

Anyone know when the hotels will start having deals for February? Seems a bit early. Fatwallet only has up until Dec 31 I think.

When when the deals start coming out? Anyone know?

Deals in February - any out there yet, or when?

Remember, lots of big conventions there in Feb.

    Magic,WSA,ASD,Travel.

Usually buy early or late, but in this case, it is going to be a toss-up. If everyone shows up, is usually top dollar. If economy keeps tankin%26#39;, they will throw out deals.

    Tough choice this year...

Deals in February - any out there yet, or when?

Your way too early for next year%26#39;s deals.

    2009 NASCAR Weekend

    February 27 - March 1, 2009

    Las Vegas Motor Speedway

Rates will go high this weekend, and a few days before and a few days following Race Weekend. Alot of Fans go for a week. Might want to avoid that time period, unless Youre going to the Race, of course! :)

I%26#39;ve been to vegas twice during race week- my schedule doesn%26#39;t allow for much other down time. The stadium holds over 110,000, there are 40 or 50 teams involved in the whole weekend with a team being up to 70 people, and 200 sponsors with 10-50 reps each.

In terms of pure impact on the city of vegas I believe that NASCAR week is the biggest flood of people annually.

I know... I know... What about CES? What about NYE? What about The Superbowl?

Sure, these are ';vegas-centric'; periods of each year, but NASCAR week is now more than 7 days, there are special events every day and people I spoke with were commuting into vegas from SOCAL to avoid the crush and prices.

Both years I survived NASCAR week were also the National Food %26amp; Beverage convention- the reason I showed up- and there were 15,000 of just us.

Hectic, fun times and I%26#39;m not a NASCAR fan. I did meet Ben Rothlesberger, though- a big racing dude I heard.

Anyway, yes- you will fully feel the race effect if you go to vegas during these days/nights. Cannot avoid it.

RealDad: Great numbers there representing NASCAR, and you are so right, that entire week for Racing, there is always something going on!!! Going Wednesday to Wednesday, driver appearances, meets and greets, all for the Fans! :)

Wouldn%26#39;t miss it for the world! Its an annual event for us! We love it, but we are NASCAR FANS, hard not to be when You live in Nascar Country. ;)

GO DALE, JR #88 - couldnt resist pulling for my hometown Mooresville, NC boy!

Nothing better than being in Vegas and having Nascar too, my favorite things! Thanks for the numbers, that was interesting!

One cool new NASCAR-VEGAS week thing to not miss if you%26#39;re in town..

The team parade down the strip.

Even for a ';civilian'; like me- I thought it was AWESOME. You%26#39;re standing on the sidewalk and the entire squad- with rigs- slowly crawls by, horns and music blazing. It was thrilling to be that close.

Then each driver broke off for personal appearances in different hotels. Classy, fun and a great memory.

    Rumjungle

What is Rumjungle like for dancing? What kind of music do they play on Saturday nights?

    Thanks!

    Rumjungle

    ttt

    Rumjungle

Not sure about sat night, we went ona tues or wed night and the music was good. Definatly dancing music, not crazy hard beats or anything like that.

    One Day In Vegas

We will be driving up from Laughlin for only one day. What are the must sees and dos? We have not been to Las Vegas for 10 years, anything new?

    Thanks for your help.

    Vicki

    One Day In Vegas

If you haven%26#39;t been there for 10 years, you will find that many things have changed...and only one day, so I guess I would see the Bellagio fountains, Planet Hollywood, Paris, go to the Venetian and Wynn, see the volcano (if it%26#39;s finished when you go), and maybe go to the top of the Strat when it gets dark for a view of the strip at night.

    One Day In Vegas

Since time is not on your side, you also did not mention what one day means to you, 9am to 5pm, 9am to 11pm??

I would probably focus my attention on things you have not seen over the last ten years or so, the Bellagio, Paris, Wynn, Mandalay, Venetian and a few other Hotels.

If you still have time check out the Forum shops, many new restaurants have opened in the past 10 years making LV a hot spot for top restaurants.

If you are there at sunset, I would recommend that you have dinner at Voodoo lounge at the Rio. Great view of the whole Vegas strip coming alive at night.

There are many new hotel/casinos that have been built in the last ten years. I would concentrate on the biggies- Bellagio conservatory and fountains (at night), Eiffel Tower (Paris) Venetian canals and ceiling. The Forum Shops(mall) at Caesars Palace has expanded. The Aladdin is now Planet Hollywood. I would make a reservation for dinner at a great restaurant. Since you will be there for such a short period of time I would stay on the strip and not bother going downtown or to any of the off strip casinos. You just don%26#39;t have time to see them.

There will also be lots of new construction that you will see. Encore at Wynn Las Vegas, Palazzo complex, City Center, and more.

Lots of the hotels are also getting out of their themes. Mandalay Bay has changed their elevators and colors, and the rooms and hallways are different. Mirage has changed their them entirely- and so did Treasure Island. You%26#39;ll see lots of renovation and change even in your hotel room unless you%26#39;re staying at a hotel that hasn%26#39;t been renovated.

    Binions or Hugo's

I have narrowed the choices for a fairly inexpensive, but good steakhouse down to these two from all of the reviews. Which do you prefer? Why?

Thanks again for all of your help.

    Binions or Hugo's

I have not eaten at Binions, but I though Hugo%26#39;s was very good. I will definately eat there again.

    Binions or Hugo's

Hugos is much better. Also more expensive.

I have yet to dine at either one. However, DH and I were pondering the same thing as you are. When compared the two, we opted for Binions, as we would like to see the sunset. I have also heard quite a few good reviews. We would rather look out at the skyline, as opposed to be in the cellar. Hugo%26#39;s has the salad cart, and does hand a rose to each lady. I think it is a matter of preference. I will let you know our experience when we return. Our trip is 10/7-10/14. I wish you luck.

    VegasSue

Haven%26#39;t tried Binions yet but plan to in the next 2 weeks. Did Hugos last year and it was incredible. Chateau and lobster tail for 2 is the way to go.. Beef was perfect as was the tail.

I haven%26#39;t eaten at Binions but I never had a bad meal at Hugo%26#39;s. The food was always good as was the service. I would definitely recommend eating there.

I%26#39;ve eaten at both - though a year apart. You really can%26#39;t go wrong with either of these places. However I think there%26#39;s very little to separate them in terms of cost, quality of food or service.

I think it boils down to whether you want to go for the Binion%26#39;s view or the %26#39;treats%26#39; at Hugo%26#39;s (salad cart, rose, chocolate covered strawberries). Either that or toss a coin - whichever way it comes up, you%26#39;re going to have a good night!

Never tried Binons, but we have never missed going to Hugo%26#39;s every trip to Vegas. Always good food and service. If it is just for two, ask for one of the half circle booth. They are against the wall and give you slightly more privacy.

Part of our tradition each time after dinner my wife finds a little girl walking around with her family on Fremont street and gives her the rose from Hugos.

Give Hugos a shot, you%26#39;ll like it.

I have eaten at Binions. The food id very good and the view is wonerful. We are heading down in a few days and are debating between Binions Steak House or Pullman at main Street Station. The Pullman has great food and a very nice atmosphere also. In line with the other two as far as prices and service if not just a little better.

Pick up area for shuttle to Rio?

I understand that there is no shuttle from Bally%26#39;s over to the Rio anymore, but that there is one that runs from Paris, could someone tell me where at Paris does the shuttle pick up at? Is it where the Taxie%26#39;s drop you off, or out in front where the Duece runs, or somewhere else? Thanks

Pick up area for shuttle to Rio?

    anyone?

Pick up area for shuttle to Rio?

The pickup for the RIO shuttle from Paris is right outside at the taxi stand. The RIO shuttle from Caesars has been changed to right outside the Colusseum entrance (to the left of the show entrance). There%26#39;s also the shuttle at Harrahs to the RIO.

Thank you so much, sometimes its best to find all these things out before arriving, saves alot of time looking and asking.

The pick-up is right outside the Ah Sin restaurant entrance closer to the strip than he taxi line. You will see a sign and a bench.

  • USA Trip of a Lifetime Report - Day 3

Just realised that perhaps it is easier if I post each day as a new topic - so that’s what I will do from now on – previous days relating to this report can be found on “USA Trip of a Lifetime Report”

    Day 3 – 25th August 2008 – The Grand Canyon

Well all too soon our Las Vegas experience is over. We were always aware that with a trip such as ours we were only ever going to be able to sample each location but we agreed early on not to be sad about the things we were unable to see or do but just enjoy the things that we could do. Anyway that leaves plenty to come back and do at some time in the future.

So, up early (ish) day 3 something like 6:30am and popped down to Starbucks – get Lyn a coffee – she is still not well – she said that if she was at home she would have stayed in bed but bless her heart she is dragging herself around as best she can.

Today I pick up the rental vehicle – 8:00am – we booked with Dollar and they have a little area allocated to them at the Luxor Reception Desk. So all packed I head down to Reception – check out and pop along to dollar to pick up our car (complete with GPS). Now I’ve not used a GPS before so I needed instructions on how to use it. We were going to stop off at the Hoover Dam on the way to the Grand Canyon and so the Dollar man was good enough to programme our first stop in for me. Great we’re set then – car was waiting in the car park (Chrysler PT Cruiser) – Lyn was waiting at the hotel entrance with the luggage – all I have to do is drive the car from the car park to the front entrance – what could be easier – well in my case understanding the theories involved in quantum mechanics would probably rank up there as slightly easier.

Surely all I have to do is turn right and right again and I’m bound to end up at the entrance – yea the entrance to the highway that takes you straight out of Las Vegas. Ok Choices - do I carry on and enjoy the rest of the holiday and hope Lyn doesn’t miss me or try and find my way back and pick Lyn up – only joking would I do that!

So pull in and have to plug in the Luxor into the GPS – it takes me back but to the wrong entrance – I park the car (in the wrong place – doorman asks me to move on) and decide to walk to the right entrance where hopefully Lyn is still waiting with the bags. Goodness that LV sun is hot!

Arrived at the correct entrance - Lyn was by now in the final stages of heat exhaustion and was providing a reasonable impression of a human red hot chilli pepper - she gave me one of those looks – words were not required – well it wasn’t my fault was it! Was it?

Anyway, all is well, packed the car, got in and wacked up the air conditioning – slip Snow Patrol – Eyes Open into the CD player give it a couple of extra nothches on the volume and we are off – what could be better. GPS is wonderful and for the moment is my friend (note for the moment) – although I have to say I don’t think its and accident of design that she sounds slightly irritated when she says the word “recalculating”

Said goodbye to Las Vegas – what little we saw we loved – America’s playground for the grown ups.

We need provisions so we stop at a store in Boulder just before the Hoover Dam filled up with the necessaries – box of Buds – wine – sherry oh and water lots of water. Walk across the car park to a place called Capriotti’s (I think) who made up the best sandwiches we ate on our whole trip – try them out they were great.

Arrived at Hoover Dam – only a short drive from Vegas – Lyn was still bad and so we only popped out for a quick look and a few photographs. Lake Mead looked beautiful and really deserved a much closer inspection but not today – Lyn was not up to any long walks in the sun – so back in the car and head onto the Grand Canyon.

The drive to the Grand Canyon was fairly uneventful – bland scenery but we did drive through a tremendous thunder storm. The drive was a long one probably about 280 miles from LV to GC and about 5.5 hours driving. Although the scenery has nothing much to commend it there were occasional glimpses of what was to come – I for one was getting very excited.

Although the RV was supposed to come with a full tank it was only three quarters full and so we filled up at Kingsman - £20 – ($38). Those of you from the UK will be interested to learn about the intricacies of filling your tank in America - drive into filling station - park next to a pump – note the number of the pump – go to payment desk – give cashier the maximum amount of money you want to pay for gas – go back to the car fill car with gas (some pumps will not work until you lift the lever that the pump rests on) – if you use all the money that you gave the cashier the pump will cut off when the amount you paid is reached – if you fill the tank before all of the money you have given then you have to go back to the cashier for your change – isn’t that neat! However, it does mean that you may have to queue twice so it may be wise to pay slightly less than you think you need or pay at the pump with your card of course.

Anyway where were we – ah yes Kingsman – well it was decision time do we turn left onto Highway 64 at Williams and go in through the South Entrance or do we drive onto Flagstaff turn left onto Highway 89 and go in through the East Entrance (as recommended by one or two Trip Advisors). Well I know what I should have done but I was so keen to see the Canyon that I went in through the South Entrance (sorry Tet you were right). We based this decision on the fact that to get to Lake Powell (our next location) we were going to have to leave via the East Exit therefore we could see those view points on the way out of the park (big mistake).

Arrived at the South Entrance at 4:00pm the excitement was building – paid $80 at the park entrance for the Annual Park Pass and in we go. The Canyon hides its secret very well – you have no idea of the presence of this magnificent spectacle until you are actually upon it. I of course couldn’t bear to check in and all that business, we had to stop at the first view point and take a look at this magnificent beast – we stopped at Mather Point and walked as nonchalantly as we could to the Rim – it was awesome!

Its difficult to express my feelings – this trip has managed to strip me bear of sufficient superlatives – I have seen the canyon so many times in pictures, which can never do it justice - it is so vast in fact it is difficult for you to take in its totality with your own eyes. We stood beside the canyon for a long while – your mind fills with selfish thoughts of wanting all the other visitors to disappear so that you can enjoy this moment by yourself. Once you become accustomed to the scale and scope of the canyon you begin to see the diverse geological structure and the myriad of colours and shades that make up this natural wonder. It was everything I wanted it to be – it was beautiful and unfortunately it can only be truly appreciated by seeing it yourself – it has been 57 years in the coming but it was well worth the wait.

Blown away with our first view of the Canyon we got back in the car and drove onto our accommodation at Maswik Lodge. The Lodge was just as I expected – bear in mind these are lodges in the middle of the Grand Canyon National Park they are not the Luxor nor would you want them to be – they are in-keeping with the environment, basic but clean and tidy – you are told there is no air conditioning but there are fans. The location is fabulous you are set in a little wood no more that 1,000 yards from the rim – if that. I must admit on reflection I think I would have like to have looked at the El Tovar lodges they looked really nice and they were right on the rim.

As soon as we had unpacked we were back to the rim – the nearest viewpoint from Maswik was Bright Angel (Hermit’s Rest is closed due to improvements until November 2008). We arrived just as the sun was setting and managed to take a card full of great pictures. Lots of like minded people on the rim exchanging their canyon and holiday experiences – perfect.

Lyn although looking better was still not well so as soon as the sun was down we grabbed a quick snack at the Maswik lodge (good food and reasonable prices) and then returned to our cabin – reviewed the photographs we had taken and went to bed ready for an early rise in the morning to capture sunrise pictures – what a day!!

USA Trip of a Lifetime Report - Day 3

Somerset Boy, I am enjoying your reports. The Grand Canyon is truly awe-inspiring. It is like looking at eternity.

USA Trip of a Lifetime Report - Day 3

Nice report - sounds like you really appreciated visiting the South Rim, that%26#39;s the way to go!

FYI, the cabins at Bright Angel are also quite close to the rim and are a good value as far as national park lodgings go.

For those who stayed at the Flamingo lately !

I am curious if there are still ants there? Ever since reading the TR last week about ants I am not sure what to do cause we are staying there in a month and not sure if I should book elsewhere. Thanks

For those who stayed at the Flamingo lately !

I haven%26#39;t stayed there recently, but I am still perplexed about that situation...I would assume by now that someone would have reported it to the Health Dept. (either Las Vegas or State of Nevada).

I keep thinking a local person will post something about it being in the paper if the problem is as bad as it has been reported.

I am also curious and wonder if anyone can give an update or has talked to either Flamingo management or whatever agency oversees the health and environment in the Vegas area.

For those who stayed at the Flamingo lately !

We just returned from a 9 day stay at the FLamingo and I never, ever saw any ants. No ants in the room, no ants in the casino, no ants in the buffet, no ants at the pool.

Personnally, I%26#39;m thinking the one that posted the trip report about having ants - I think they might have brought the ants in with them (inadvertantly, but come on - how come the ants followed them from room to room???).

We didn%26#39;t have a GO room, and the room 25138 - wasn%26#39;t the nicest (especially compared to a GO room) - but it was fine. Really, we weren%26#39;t in the room that much anyhow.

IMHO - stay at the Flamingo - it%26#39;s really a great location!

We stayed there last time in a GO room with a view and loved it so will stay again and hope for the best lol

We did not stay there but we did walk through the casino. It was wall to wall old folks( nothing against old folks) and had a very musty smell

I just returned from the Flamingo and I never saw a ant anywhere. I was in a deluxe room, the casino, pool and multiple restaurants. We also went up to th emonorail station. And after reading about the ants I was looking

    Slot Machine winnings

    Question for you experts..

A few month ago I saw a lady sit across from me.. put in $100 in a quarter slot.. very first spin hits jackpot of $1000 or 4000 credits. The counter on the machine went beserk and repeated until the guy came to turn it off.. overheard her argue with the guy.. he wanted to pay her $1000 but she argued that she just put $100 in and should get $1099.25 back!

Guy said max jacpot was $1000 regardless of whatever was left in there.

I%26#39;ve never won a jackpot, can anyone clarify? If this is the case, I woll only put $20 in from now on in case i hit something big.

    Slot Machine winnings

She can still cash out the $99.25. What on earth was she on about. Or am i being stupid and missing something.

    Slot Machine winnings

As the other poster said, she hit for $1000 and still had $99.25 left to play or cash out.

She probably just didn%26#39;t realize that her $99.25 was still there to be played or cashed out.

She may have the $99.25 credit, but she may not, we just don%26#39;t know. I sure would like to hear from anyone that has hit a jackpot to find out if they leave your credits on the machine. What if you are building up credits and have 700-800 credits and hit a jackpot? I don%26#39;t think the casino would just pay out the $1,000.00 and wipe out your credits. (wish I could hit a $1,000.00 on my first spin though. I would gladly sacrifice the Franklin).

Yes, of course, your credits are still left on the machine. I just experienced this last week. This was on a machine that paid out all jackpots of $400 or more. When paid out my $400, I still had $19.75 left in the machine. I was paying quarter video keno and hit 6 out of 6.

I won $1000 in Jan on VP at Excalibur but still had over $200 on the machine besides that. He opened the machine and ';did his thing in the machine'; after he paid me then when he closed the machine, it still showed what credits were on there before I hit the royal and I just started playing on those again. I also hit not long ago in Cripple Creek and they did the same thing. You don%26#39;t lose the credits that you already had. They just pay you your jackpot winnings and you play off the rest of your credits.

When I have had the luck to win a jackpot, whether it was a progressive or not, I was paid the winnings of that jackpot. My credits prior to the win were still there after the payoff and machine reset.

All this lady needed to do was cash out the remaining credits and she surely would have had the $1099.25 total in her hands.

The weird thing was when she hit the jackpot the counter went beserk.. it went to 4000 then back to 0 and started counting again. It ended up showing 3467 or something.. when the guy reset the machine it went down to 0 and he paid her the $1k.. it was kind of weird.. i think the credit count was suppose to freeze while the light goes off..

Unfortunately, as noted on all machines, ';Machine Malfunction Voids All Pays.'; A machine malfunction happened to me once at the Palms where the manual reels went haywire and I thought I had hit the jackpot. They came over and re-set it and gave me something like $2 in cash, because I was honest about how many credits I had left to play. I figured if I went with a really high figure they%26#39;d investigate it more thoroughly and it wasn%26#39;t worth it to be branded a cheat.

Interesting question especially because the $1000 is less than a w2g amount. Every time I have ever hit a hand pay, on a coin paying machine, I was paid the entire amount, the win plus the credits. and thats every casino I ever played in.

so I am guessing this incident was some Indian casino without TITO ! or the TITO would have printed for 1099.25.

To the poster, was this an Indian Casino?

What is a ';P'; room at Paris

I%26#39;ve seen reference to a ';P'; room at Paris. We%26#39;ll be there in a week and wondered what ';P'; is for.

What is a ';P'; room at Paris

I%26#39;m pretty sure it means Premier or Premium room which (some or all) have been recently renovated and includes a view of the strip.

What is a ';P'; room at Paris

A ';P'; room at Paris is a corner room at the end of a hallway. We almost always stay in these because we like the two views (windows on both sides). The room number actually has a ';P'; at the end of the number and the number is shared with the suite at the end of the hall.

Thanks for the clarification. Our rooms are comped and we%26#39;re not high rollers, so I doubt we%26#39;d get a P room. Last time we had a newly renovated room on the executive level (no view), but very nice and if we got that room again we%26#39;d be thrilled.

Road conditions in October from Sacramento to Tahoe

I%26#39;ll be flying into Sacramento and renting a car to drive to north Tahoe/Incline Village in late October. Am wondering about road conditions at that time of year. Will I have to worry about ice or snow on the road, or needing chains, etc.?? Is there anything to be concerned about? I will be driving at night. Any thoughts, tips, etc. are appreciated.

  • 100 % Pay Back Machines

Has anyone out there ever heard about the 100 % payback slot machines? I heard about them on the Travel channel and they say that they are in Vegas. I imagine they would be downtown. Any input is appreciated. :)

    100 % Pay Back Machines

Let%26#39;s do some basic math first lol. A 100% payback machine would mean you would not lose any money. Nor would you win any money. What%26#39;s the fun in that?

Any casino can put a sign up at any bank of machines and claim that they have a ';98% payback'; or a ';100% payback';. It%26#39;s still subject to variables like how long you play the machine and how much you put into it, these percentages could mean that ';if'; you play max credits for 4 hours at 75 cents a pull you will only lose 2% of your money.

It could also mean that if you play for 4 hours you would walk away down $999, and the person that comes in behind you could win $1,000 on their first pull.

There is no ';magic slot machine'; that is going to make you a winner.

    100 % Pay Back Machines

When we played at Fitzgerald%26#39;s earlier this year, there was a bank that had a sign that was 98% payback, if I remember correctly. I played these and lost.

    Quote ';Let%26#39;s do some basic math first lol. A 100% payback machine would mean you would not lose any money. Nor would you win any money. What%26#39;s the fun in that?';

That%26#39;s not strictly speaking true. If I put $100 into a machine and lost it all and the next guy came along and won a $100, then it%26#39;s 100% payback. Having said that I have no idea where these machines might be!

    Condensed TR 11 Sept - 18 Sept.

I can%26#39;t compete with some of the really entertaining TR%26#39;s on here so here%26#39;s a condensed and factual one. Hope it%26#39;s ok. Me and DH both early 40%26#39;s, 4th trip to LV and like buffets.

Did the night before check-in at Manchester airport which was great, no queue and managed to get extra leg room seats just by asking...first score of trip. We stopped in a near by hotel for the night and only had to be at the airport 2 hours before flight time in the morning instead of 3. Flew with BMI non-stop direct 10 hours but worth it.The flight was on time (9am) and the service as good as ever.

Arrived on time in LV (2pm), but due to a mix up spent the next hour waiting for our luggage which had been taken to a different terminal. Never mind. Weather boiling hot 102 degrees!!Caught a cab to Bally%26#39;s(no tunnel) nice driver $20 inc tip. No queue at check-in..room ready in North Tower..straight in. Room was lovely, clean and very large. The bed was huge and comfy and inviting! After unpacking had a little stroll around the casino and at 6pm (2am UK time) decided to call it a day and get caught up on our sleep.

Wokeup at 430 am and decided to see the sun come up on the strip. Noticed 3 types of people up at that time...joggers, clubbers going home and ladies of the night actually still working!!

Caught the deuce and went Downtown Friday night which was a lot better than our last trip in March 07. There was a better atmoshpere and more people.

Went to the boxing match at MGM on Sat, Saw Ricky Hatton, Mike Tyson and Oscar De La Hoya. It was full of Mexican people enjoying themselves and it created a great atmosphere...especially when Marquez won.

Changed hotels on Monday to The Signature. Room ready again so straight up and unpacked. The rooms are fantastic. The bathroom is huge with the jetted tub and seperate toilet. The bed wasn%26#39;t as big as Bally%26#39;s but if possible more comfy. Having the kitchenette is very handy as is the cofee maker.

We visited all the new places that had opened since we were there last like Encore and Palazzo (anyone else noticed the smell outside the Palazzo, stunk like sewage) We also couldn%26#39;t believe the size of City Centre, that thing is going to be huge. It somehow looks too big and out of place.

We ate at Main Street Station, Bellagio, Planet Hooywood, Hilton and Wynn, all buffets. To be honest apart from a little extra choice there wasn%26#39;t much in them all. Our favorite was Wynn though I think.

We gambled at every casino we went in and won a bit lost a bit no real hits. We loved 2 machines in particular.. Goldfish and Invaders from the Planet Moolah... both funny and entertaining.

My new favorite drink is a Chocolate Martini(thanks for the recommendation on TA) I think the best CW service we got was in Caesars Palace, we tipped $5 for 2 drinks and they kept coming every 5 mins!

Flight home on time, though they had over-booked and were asking for volunteers to stop an extra 2 nights at Monte Carlo all comped and $200 spending money. Tried to persuade DH to go for it but he wouldn%26#39;t:( To sum up we had a great time, came home with a little bit of money and some brill memories. Hoping to go again in late 2010. We would stop at Bally%26#39;s again without a doubt as location wise and price wise it can%26#39;t be beat for us.

    Thanks for reading.

    Condensed TR 11 Sept - 18 Sept.

Glad you had a great trip! Too bad you couldn%26#39;t have talked DH into 2 extra nights!!! Happy planning for 2010!!!

    Condensed TR 11 Sept - 18 Sept.

Nice trip report. Glad you had a good time.

Thank You for the detailed TR, especially helpful on the reviews of the Hotels! We havent stayed at Ballys in yrs, good to know that the North Tower was really nice!

Part of our stay in October will be at Caesars, made me very happy to hear that the cocktail service was outstanding! ;) Chocolate Martini is also one of my fave drinks, fantastic they come around so often! ;)

Thanks again for all the reviews! I will have to find that Invaders from the Planet Moolah, know the Goldfish, and cant wait to play all those fun bonus round games!

You made some good memories, and I hope time flys by until youre able to return!

Driving to Tahoe from Sacramento in October

Driving to Tahoe from Sacramento in October

You will be fine in all liklihood. It would be a rare occurance for it to snow in amounts that would require you to use chains. Remember it isn%26#39;t the fact that it might be snowing, it depends on the quantity and temperature. If the snow does not stick, then it can%26#39;t accumulate in amounts that would affect traction.

Last Ocotber there was a day in mid-October when it snowed enough to require chains for a short time but then it cleared up and the restrictions were lifted and the snow at thh lower elevations melted.

The best you can do is keep an eye on the weather forecast. Chain requirements, when enforced are intermittent not continuous over the season.

    safety of Ti area

    Hi everyone!

Would Treasure Island be safe to walk too alone during the night time? If not is there a shuttle close by or a monorail? I am going to stay there the end of this month by myself, to see it would be fit for my husband’s birthday surprise.

    Thanks!!

    safety of Ti area

Walk to from where? From most of the strip should be fine. From the stratosphere maybe not.

    safety of Ti area

The only place I would probley be out at night is Bally or Flamingo, maybe Harrah%26#39;s or Bellagio. Would this be okay?

Is there a shuttle around ti or a monorail that takes you up and down the strip?

    Its perfectly safe.

I feel safe walking pretty much everywhere on the strip alone except maybe around CC area at night. TI are is perfectly safe. There are always alot of people walking around the strip at night, especially around the center, Bally%26#39;s, Flamingo, etc. Just be aware of your surroundings like you would anywhere at night and you will be fine.

    Have fun!

You will be fine walking around the places you mentioned. I was at Bellagio last year in Sept, had friends staying at Flamingo, I walked back to B alone a couple of nights and it was after midnight. I was fine!

Minmurphy. Have you ever been to a big city? Durant, OK sounds like Mayberry RFD. Stay with the pack and you%26#39;ll get back. Don%26#39;t wander down the side streets to far and keep your head up to what%26#39;s around you. You%26#39;ll be fine.

There really isnt a shuttle/monorail that takes you up/down the strip. The monorail runs behind MGM to Sahara/Riviera - but is not the most convenient to ride since you have to walk all the way through the casinos to get to the monorail. I%26#39;ve never had a problem walking anywhere on the strip in the daytime and even at night - like the other posters said - be aware of your surroundings. You could always ride the DUECE bus - I think its $5 for a all day pass - but remember - during rush hour times the bus is really crowded. From TI I wouldn%26#39;t go any further than Wynn/Fashion show mall at one end or Mandalay Bay at the other end of the strip on foot. Of course, on foot - that would be a heck of a walk.

    Enjoy yourself and be safe!

It is a safe to walk alone. You do not have to worry about that area. If you want to get to the Mirage and casinos near it from TI without walking (not for safely reasons)- just take the free tram that runs from TI to the Mirage.

I have never felt unsafe anywhere on the strip, downtown or off strip- day or night. Use common sense and you will be fine.

Thanks to you all. Pigbob: I have been to Las Vegas before so, yes I have been to a city. lol, Durant is a small town but it%26#39;s not as small as you are thinking. We actually have a BIG casion and resort area, and a university here.

    Pre-Trip Details

Wrapping up the details of leaving home today. This will be a short trip of only four days. The number of planned days has changed a couple of times.

The last change was due to Hurricane Ike and a promise I made to help out.

This will be a brief trip so upon return my trip report will be brief.(I promise)

We are flying from Rochester MN tomorrow. We found a great deal for $107 each round trip on Allegiant.

The purpose of the trip is to sell a home we own in Las Vegas and upgrade to a custom lot so we can build. Any number of things could go wrong but I/m not stressed about that. What will be will be.

Plans include attending the Art Expo at MB, seeing Jeff McBride in The Edge of Magic. Dining at Vox Wine Lounge in GV.

The rest we will wing but it will include some slushies, a nice meal or two, and some gaming.

    Buying Alcohol

Where can you purchase liquor, is it available at the corner stores or do you have to go to a liquor store like we do in Ontario.

    Buying Alcohol

Right behind Flamingo (I believe) is an ABC store. Liquor and snacks, it is a 7-11 type thing. There is also a Walgreens on the strip by Monte Carlo or maybe on the MGM side.

I%26#39;m sure there is more recent advice coming.

    Cheers,

    CS

    Buying Alcohol

You can purchase liquor at most casino gift shops (pretty expensive), ABC stores and liquor stores. The Orleans and Gold Coast have very good prices.

Corner stores. We have liquor stores here in New Jersey, too. No such nonsense in Nevada.

We pack a bottle of Bourban and a bottle of Vodka in our Suitcase. You CAN put liquor in there, you just can%26#39;t have more than 3 oz bottles in your cary-on. We have been doing it for years and years, and never have had a problem.

Don%26#39;t you worry about the bottles breaking and soaking your luggage?

I%26#39;m sure you already know this jride, but don%26#39;t bring your own even if you can - it is a lot cheaper to buy it down there.

If you are planning on gambling, you may not even need to purchase your own because of course they will feed you liquor as long as your gambling, for free.

    Have fun.

It has never happened so I guess until it does, I will keep on doing it. Besides, Vegas clothes are always wash and wear.

I%26#39;m so proud of myself for actually answering the OP%26#39;s question. And some people on TA imply that I%26#39;m not helpful. HA!

For liquor for our room, we used an ABC store in the Miracle Mile Mall accross from the Bellagio near the Paris and Planet Hollywood....nice mall to browse through also.

me and my friends usually head to a supermarket the first night to stock up on snacks and drinks, better selection then a drug store on the strip and usually cheaper. theres a few supermarkets off strip thats not too far if you have a car, or you could take a cab.

Here%26#39;s the info on the club at Stratosphere. The girls that I know who went there had a great time. I think you can move from one to the other, but not sure....

Polly Esther%26#39;s, the wildly successful national nightclub chain, has brought its trademark disco balls, DeLoreans and Doc Martens to the Stratosphere Hotel Casino. The sprawling,1,300-capacity Polly Esther%26#39;s comprises four unique clubs- Culture Club, Nerve Ana, Suite 2000 and its namesake, Polly Esther%26#39;s. LA / Las Vegas Restaurant for Lunch on Route

Family of 4 travelling between LA (Universal Studios) and Las Vegas on a Sunday, can you suggest somewhere on the way that you would recommend for Lunch,Thanks in advance

LA / Las Vegas Restaurant for Lunch on Route

Not a huge amount of choice as you drive across the desert. Certainly no fine dining! Barstow has a lot of the usual fast food chain suspects but there are a couple of more interesting choices a little further along I-15. Peggy Sue%26#39;s Diner at Yermo and Mad Greek at Baker are probably as good as it gets.

No chance of missing these places. You%26#39;ll see signs repeatedly appearing as you draw close to them.

LA / Las Vegas Restaurant for Lunch on Route

    Hi

We have done that drive more than once and as Blagger has said, they are your choices. We have stopped at Peggy Sue%26#39;s as it sounded great when I found it on the internet, but it is just a small diner, I think we had curly fries with cheese, so that%26#39;s the sort of thing they sell. There are a few fast food%26#39;s at the outlet%26#39;s ie M%26#39;D%26#39;s Taco Bell etc. The only one we haven%26#39;t tried is Mad Greek%26#39;s. The stop at the outlet%26#39;s give%26#39;s you the most choice and is easy on/off the freeway and of course being fast food you can get back on your journey asap.

    Preview Performance???

So me and my hubby booked our first trip to Vegas about a month ago, and the first show we booked was Criss Angel Believe. We were sooo excited and paid top dollar for good seats.

Anyway, we just found out that the show has been changed to a preview performance?? Can anyone clarify exactly what this is? Will Criss still be performing live? I%26#39;m guessing it is the same as a regular show but more ';raw';?

    Preview Performance???

    In my limited experience:

You will get a 25% discount. If, for some rare reason, they need to stop the show and reset something or there is some minor mistake, you can%26#39;t complain.

I generally like the preview shows as they are the same show at a discount.

    It%26#39;s ain%26#39;t a show without Criss.

    Preview Performance???

I believe that you have to call the box office and get your tickets re-issued to get the 25% discount. The show should be the same as the regular show, they are just working out the kinks. They usually try to get the regular show down to about 90 minutes, so you may see a longer show. I heard that when some of the other Cirque shows were in previews they were over 2 hours long.

Thanks for the replies. Actually the preview sounds pretty good. Hopefully it won%26#39;t be too long considering it%26#39;s close to the opening date. You know money to spend, places to go. LOL

Have tix to 9/30 show. They are also offering a dinner package at 4 different restaurants at the luxor. Go to the luxor home page and click on Believe. Will have a review here as long as they don%26#39;t postpone again.

i got a call a couple days ago about my show tix.

had 2 for the late show on Mon Oct 27, was told that the late show was cancelled at that date and was offered same seats for early show. as it falls within the newly altered ';preview performance period';, they took the 25% off.

yes, Criss will be performing, depending on how close to the premeire expect that they%26#39;re gonna be fine tuning the performances, which may not be anything noticable.

Just wanted to note that it is a ';live'; performance. At The Price is Right last Wednesday, the host started to award the Showcase to the losing contestant before being corrected by the announcer. So, preview show or a long running one, its still live! Who knows, you may have a great story to tell should Criss mess up one of his tricks.

    Vegas Weather Stats -

If anyone is interested I just found a vegas website I haven%26#39;t thought of looking at before.

    www.lasvegasnevada.gov/Visitor/default.htm

Just for fun (and for answers that alot of people ask) I pasted the weather averages.

Does anybody disagree with these averages?

Average Monthly Weather Conditions in Las Vegas

Month Avg Low Avg High Humidity%

    January 39°F 4°C 58°F 14°C 43

    February 41°F 5°C 61°F 16°C 28

    March 49°F 9°C 71°F 22°C 22

    April 55°F 13°C 77°F 25°C 20

    May 66°F 19°C 91°F 32°C 18

    June 74°F 23°C 100°F 38°C 21

    July 81°F 27°C 105°F 41°C 24

    August 78°F 26°C 102°F 39°C 26

    November 46°F 8°C 66°F 19°C 31

    December 39°F 4°C 57°F 14°C 44

    Vegas Weather Stats -

The weather averages are available on dozens of websites, we give these out daily - you can use whichever one you like.

averages are historically accurate since they are a matter of record. i can%26#39;t imagine anyone disagreeing with accurate past history, but what if they do?

If this is the website you prefer, great. I like NOAA%26#39;s interface, many prefer weather.com or accuweather.com for the ease of use.

    Vegas Weather Stats -

I wouldn%26#39;t disagree with the averages but I have been in Vegas enough times (every month of the year) to know that averages are just that and aren%26#39;t always useful for a specific visit. You just get a general idea of the weather for the month and nothing more.

The average high in March depends on when you are going - it could be 66 or 73. However- on March 21, 2004 the high was 92 and on March 21, 2006 the high was 51! That is a big difference in temps and if someone was relying on ';averages'; they would have been in for a surprise!

This is why it isn%26#39;t much of a help to have people post what it was like while they were there. For many many years I was in Vegas at the beginning of November and I know the temps can be all over the place. Some years I was able to swim (and wear shorts), other years I was only able to sunbathe and still other years it was so windy/cloud/cool that I could do neither and I had to wear a sweater even during the day.

The best advice is always the same: check a weather site just before leaving to see what the weather is going to be like during your visit- you could hit a warm or cold spell. And for most of the late fall, winter and early spring you should bring clothes that can be layered no matter what so you can be prepared for any kind of weather if the forecast should change(and it does).

    If you want daily averages:

bridgefan surely you can not be As RUDE as you seem.

Did you not get the JUST FOR FUN.............

Just thought others might find it kind of interesting.

And the disagree part was not meant as a record disagreement just as a seems hotter or colder than recorded.

Thanks Poodlefan for posting the averages, averages are a pretty good indicator most of the time with the exception of a weird off year now and then.

I will take that October average, over the hot, blazing summers in Vegas anytime. We also love March!

Again, appreciate the information! I am sure many people will find it helpful, (I certainly did) some of us start wardrobe shopping 6 weeks out before a Vegas trip, not a week before. ;)

    Hi

Another way to get an average is to go on www.wunderground.com and use the trip planner option, you can then get the averages for your dates.

    Clive

C%26#39;mon Poodlefan, you think bridgefan%26#39;s post was rude? You had me reading it three times and I still fail to see the rudeness. Averages are only an abstract number and figures lie and liars figure

Getting married in Vegas (October 2nd) on a Harley

We are due to fly out in a week and the plan is to get married on the 2nd October at the drive through on a Harley...

Anyone want to join us? Either for the drive or party afterwards.

    Hope so.

Getting married in Vegas (October 2nd) on a Harley

Congratulations! If you post some more details such as just where the ceremony will be taking place and a little more about your plans for later then you%26#39;ll hopefully get some responses.

  • USA Trip of a Lifetime Report - Day 5

    Day 5 鈥?27th August 2008 鈥?Lake Powell

Today is our anniversary 鈥?Lyn is up before me (5:30am) and is already striding purposefully towards the rim for our last view of a Grand Canyon sunrise 鈥?I hold back so that I can write her card and find her present that I hid on present.

I can鈥檛 believe it day 5 already and we鈥檙e leaving the Grand Canyon 鈥?we have a 150 mile drive to Lake Powell which if we didn鈥檛 stop would take around 3 hours 鈥?well you can at least double that for us 鈥?we tend to do more stopping than driving. Right if you remember I explained earlier on that we intended looking at the east entrance viewpoints on the way out today 鈥?so that is what we did. We started with Yaki Point, then Grandview Point; followed by Moran Point, Zuni Point, Papago Point, Pinal Point, Lipan Point and finally Desert View. Well, I鈥檓 not sure that it was because these view points were now new to us but they looked even better than the viewpoints we had restricted ourselves to further west. These viewpoints seem to give you a better uninterrupted view of the Canyon and I sure they would have been even better (if that was possible) for sunset and sunrise pictures. I particularly liked Lipan and Desert View (and Grandview well all of them really). At Desert View you can visit and climb the watchtower to get an even better view of the Canyon as well as the Painted Desert.

Oh yes we also visited the Tusayan Ruins and Museum 鈥?these are the ruins of a small Anasazi village, dating back to the late 1100s - visitors receive a brief history lesson of how some of the early settlers in this area lived. The Tusayan site is the only one with easy access. Paved walking paths wind through the pueblo excavation and there is a small museum. Admission is free. Estimated walking time is about 30 minutes but be warned there are some very interesting Ranger programmes which provide you with a small tour and much more information 鈥?we had to miss this out because we just didn鈥檛 have the time 鈥?shame looked really good.

So my advice is regardless of the entrance that you use to come in to the Grand Canyon spend some time to begin with looking at all the view points from one end to the other 鈥?you can then decide which is your favourite which you can return to for photo opportunities or just a romantic evening starring at the stars 鈥?wish I had.

Ok we filled the car with petrol at Desert View $39 (拢22) bid a sad farewell to the Grand Canyon; slip The Feeling 鈥?Twelve Stops from Home into the CD player; turn up the turbo boost on the Cruiser and continued on our way via Highway 89 which takes you all the way to Page.

This drive is in sharp contrast to the one which brings you into the Grand Canyon 鈥?we are now surrounded by stunning scenery.

This route takes us through the western edge of the Navajo Reservation, with views of the Painted Desert on our left and Marble Canyon on our right. It crosses the Little Colorado River at Cameron and passes under the Echo Cliffs north of The Gap.

I鈥檓 not qualified to speak on the native American debate but you can鈥檛 help thinking about their history 鈥?I would like to find out more about how they view their situation now 鈥?as a visitor it still looks as though they are living a very meagre existence which isn鈥檛 consistent with the lifestyle of the rest of America 鈥?I realise this is an area of debate which is fraught with controversy and I may be in danger of trying to impose lifestyle expectations on a group of people which are stereo typical of my own and so for the sake of this report I don鈥檛 think it is appropriate to peruse this line of thought 鈥?however, I can鈥檛 explain my sense of sadness for the native American population.

Right back to the trip 鈥?the scenery from the car is now fabulous 鈥?the sight of Marble Canyon continually draws your eye. Eventually the Echo Cliffs come into view and just pass the Trading Post called The Gap you climb to the right and pass through Antelope Pass 鈥?this would have been a fabulous photo opportunity but unfortunately road works had closed the pull in 鈥?would have been a great picture back along the Canyon.

Now, up until now I kept mentioning to Lyn that we must look out for Horse Bend 鈥?I didn鈥檛 have any details of this stop, I just remember a Trip Advisor mentioning that it was on the road and was worth a visit. We were now approaching Page and I thought we had missed it when, there it was, we managed to bring the Cruiser to a halt, turn around and drove into the car park. Goodness it was still very, very hot but still it looked as though Horseshoe bend was just on top of the big dune at the end of the car park and a sign confirmed that it was only .25 miles to Horseshoe Bend.

Well, that can鈥檛 be so bad then 鈥?collect camera and water and head off to the dune (those of you that have made this 鈥榮mall excursion will, I am sure, be having a secret smile now).

We make the 鈥榯esting鈥?climb to the top of the dune and notice that a lot of the people coming back are not looking so good 鈥?oh well perhaps they鈥檙e not as fit as us 鈥?crack on! We make it to the top of the dune only to discover that Horseshoe Bend is still a long way off down the other side of the dune and across some very hot looking barren scrub. At this stage a German couple in the final stages of what can only be described as heat exhaustion manage to stagger back to our position at the top of the dune 鈥?the lady who was about our age (if not a bit younger) was in a very bad way 鈥?Lyn offered her a drink of water and she accepted gratefully 鈥?her husband did the same. Revived they eventually dragged their weary bodies back towards the car park. This concerned me, Lyn was much better by now but still not back to full strength. I was concerned that this may set her back but she was determined to carry on.

The walk was worth it 鈥?Horseshoe Bend was glorious 鈥?I found that it was difficult to capture the full effect of the Horseshoe standing on the rim and so I fully extended my tripod 鈥?stood out as far as I could on the precarious lip of the Bend put the camera on a 10 second delay pressed the button and hoisted the tripod into the air as far as I could whilst leaning out as far as I dare 鈥?hey it worked 鈥?now I don鈥檛 necessarily recommend this method of photographing Horseshoe Bend as you are just as likely to either loose your camera over the side or topple over and fall to your death 鈥?neither of which does anything to improve your holiday experience.

The walk back to the car was everything we expected 鈥?HOT and EXHAUSTING. We got back to the car 鈥?collapsed into our seats and put the air conditioning onto max. I鈥檓 sure Lyn gave me another one of those looks but I couldn鈥檛 see for the sweat in my eyes.

Two bottles of water later we had recovered sufficiently to continue on our way 鈥?we drove the short distance into Page 鈥?I have never seen so many houses of worship so close together - the folk of Page obviously take their religion very seriously.

The GPS didn鈥檛 recognise The Lake Powell Resort and so we had to try and find by traditional methods which involved driving around in circles for an hour or so until we get so lost that we ask someone the way 鈥?we eventually did and a very nice American gentleman at the Glen Canyon Dam pointed us in the right direction 鈥?thank you very much.

We arrive at The Lake Powell Resort and check in 鈥?we walk to our room stepped out onto our terrace and were greeted with a view that takes your breath away 鈥?If I had been asked to pick the ideal room on the whole resort we could not have done better 鈥?we were on the ground floor, just left of the swimming pool with a panoramic view of the lake 鈥?I thought I had died and gone to heaven 鈥?suddenly the Grand Canyon had a real contender for most fabulous location on this trip.

Lyn headed straight to the pool I headed for the camera 鈥?the most fabulous sunset was in progress.

Later in the evening we visited the pizzeria for a snack on the way back we saw the Milky Way in the sky clearer than we鈥檝e ever seen it before 鈥?star gazed for a while and eventually turned in about 10:00pm 鈥?Lake Powell is just beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!!!

Am I losing my mind? I am not a big socializer- not a big gift exchanger - not a neighborhood sugar borrower. I took time off to sit with like minded people who just loves the old ways.

    5 couples...where to have dinners?

    Hi,

10 of us are going at the end of October - Fri-Mon, staying at the MGM. Where would you recommend we eat for dinners? I assume we will need reservations everywhere for all 10 of us? We%26#39;d like 1 really nice dinner, maybe one buffet and one place to go before Mystere 7pm show.

    Really appreciate your help!

    5 couples...where to have dinners?

For a nice meal, I%26#39;d recommend Craftsteak and Pearl at MGM. You would definitely need reservations.

For a buffet, I%26#39;d only recommend Bellagio and Wynn. Paris for breakfast only. Mandalay Bay gets good reviews but I haven%26#39;t tried it yet.

Before Mystere, you could go to Kahunaville - decent enough food - not gourmet at all, it%26#39;s a fun place with flair bartenders. Kahunaville is located right outside of the theater of Mystere. I would make reservations since you need to be at the show that night.

    Have fun.

    5 couples...where to have dinners?

price ranges needed - pp++ w/o alcohol. will you have a vehcile?

without knowing prices some of our favs:

Joel R or Alex for nice dinner

    Wynn buffet

Some places in Las Vegas don%26#39;t really like to split the ticket up among 5 couples. We were with a group once at the Range Steakhouse at Harrahs and our waiter cheerfully gave us separate tickets. We ate at Caesars like that once and the waiter didn%26#39;t want to split the tickets and it%26#39;s always uncomfortable then because you either have to just end up paying for the whole thing or sort out who had what because there%26#39;s always one couple in the group who wants to share an item, etc. The Range is good.

    ';We ate at Caesars like that once and the waiter didn%26#39;t want to split the tickets and it%26#39;s always uncomfortable then because you either have to just end up paying for the whole thing or sort out who had what because there%26#39;s always one couple in the group who wants to share an item, etc.';

Solution: Don%26#39;t travel with cheap people! :)

Just agree to split the bill 5 ways and move on.

Great place to have a fantastic dinner is at the Eiffel Tower restaurant at Paris, food is excellent, service is superior %26amp; the view is spectacular of the strip %26amp; Bellagio fountains. Great buffet to try is Wynn is the best on the strip, great choices %26amp; excellent quality. A place to eat before the show is Nero%26#39;s at Caesars the food is so good that it feels like it melts in your mouth or you could try the Mesa Grill at Caesars great southwest flavor.

Have a great time in Vegas!!!!!

For the %26#39;special%26#39; meal out, do Alize at the Palms, food and service are excellent and the view is phenomenal. It really makes for a very special evening out.

As for the suggestion of Nero%26#39;s, it is very good, but also not cheap and there are other places that fill the nice or special meal category better than it does. Same can be said for Eiffel Tower, it is good but overpriced for what you get. Just pay the small fee and go up for a look from it. Also, keep in mind, the restaurant is not at the top of the tower!

Have you also tried to google reviews? You may come across a site that can help you.

    Clive

Can%26#39;t help with your airline%26#39;s seat configuration but if you%26#39;re coming into the US on an international flight and you%26#39;re sitting towards the back of a large plane that could have you being close to the rear of a very long line at immigration if you%26#39;re amongst the last off of the aircraft.

    Eldorado follow up

    Hello All,

A month ago I wrote to ask which room I should book at the Eldorado, Standard or Deluxe. Your comments helped me correctly select and book the deluxe.

Yesterday, I receved an email from the Eldo about low October rates. I called and turns out that a luxury room was even less than my deluxe room. Ok, sign me up! The customer service was excellent as well. Oh, and a 2-for-1 show was included. Ok, that starts off my vacation on the right foot!

    Yo Eleven!

    Eldorado follow up

Any plans on going to their new buffet and reporting back to us on that?

    Eldorado follow up

You bet! We plan to use the 2-for-1 show coupon combined with the buffet on 10/16. A full Pepto-Bismol report will be submitted for your viewing pleasure!

Google doesn%26#39;t seem to have any in the henderson area. Just wondering if anyone can advise me something near the casino?

    thanks

    laundromat near southpoint casino?

You might have a problem finding one thats close.

    …bestredyp.com/PageBossPage.html

Im sure the Hotel has some type of cleaning laundry service available for there guests.

    laundromat near southpoint casino?

If you don%26#39;t have a car it may be difficult to find one . Hotel laundries usually charge an arm and a leg. There are places that will pick up and deliver to hotels- for a fee. When you get to Vegas you can look in the yellow pages of the phone book under Laundries.

I know Duds and Suds and Anonio%26#39;s used to provide that service. The usual costs -$1/1.25 a pound(could be more now)- 10 pound minimum and a service charge for pick up/delivery.

    thanks,

I have been using the yellow pages and maps and the closest seems to be about a 15min drive north, 4275 Arville st or at 1801 E Tropicana ave, near the airport. Any opinion of which would be easier to drive too?

we will be in hotels for 4 weeks so yes, much too expensive to use the hotel service.

Both places are not that far away, both are fairly easy to drive to minus heavy traffic, I would choose Arville over Trop only because the traffic can be tuff on Trop more so at certain times of the day.

If you can afford to travel to USA, YOU should be able to afford laundry service at the Casino.

INQUIRE about the service and prices

Grandpa - do you think they might be in the US for 4 weeks because they are budgeting in other ways? Really, washing clothes through the hotel service is rediculous in price- geared at the business traveler who will right it off as a business expense(stepping off soap box).

Head to the laundry - save your $$ for more fun things.

    Cheers,

    CS

    grandpa08,

well we ARE travelling to the states for 4 weeks and I can%26#39;t afford hotel laundry, gambling, meals over 40.00, hotels over 100.00 ( southpoint is at 60.00 a night so comparable to a motel or hostel ) taxi%26#39;s, helicopter flights, or nba games. Strangely I still think we will have a great time, meet lots of lovely americans, see amazing sights and generally have the time of our lives, even if our clothes don%26#39;t have a hotel sheen and we don%26#39;t take home our weight in shopping.

I don%26#39;t think it matters which one you use if you have a car. If you are using Wizard Of Suds (Arville)they used to be open 24 hours a day with security at night. They also were connected to a deli and arcade.

Mystere show...any discount codes for Oct shows

    Hi All

Going to book for Mystere show for beginning of Oct?, have only found discount codes for shows upto 30 Sep, does anyone know any codes for Oct or sites with discount.

We want to book in advance as we defo want to see the show on a particular night.

Caesars Palace - Bette Midler - Seating

    Okay,

I%26#39;ve decided we are going to see Bette. Yippeeeeee.

But, can%26#39;t figure out which type tickets to get.

Has anybody seen her show to know which type seats are best?

    Section A - Drink Package - Front Orchestra $272.00

    Section B - Drink Package - Rear Orchestra $197.00 Section C - Drink Package - First Mezzanine $162.00

Section D - Dinner Package @ Planet Hollywood Restaurant, and Second Mezzanine Seating $136.95

    Section D -Drink Package-Second Mezzanine $117.00

I%26#39;m thinking B or C, just not sure how the views are in Caesars.

Would Section D be considered the ';nose-bleed'; section? The prices are a little better.

Caesars Palace - Bette Midler - Seating

There isn%26#39;t really a terrible seat at the Coloseum - remember it was designed for Celine with great views from all seats in mind.

Out of the options I%26#39;d go for B - you%26#39;ll get more appreciation of the ';whole show';, although closer in A you%26#39;ll obviously see Bette herself better.

It%26#39;s notoriously difficult to find a detailed seating plan for the Coloseum online - I think I found one on google images once - but it%26#39;s worth it to be sure where you%26#39;re seated.

    Enjoy the show!

Caesars Palace - Bette Midler - Seating

We sat on the third row of the rear orchestra in the center. Bette%26#39;s husband sat on the front row of that section the night we saw it. She made a comment to the people in the front row during the show about, ';Who do you have to know to get those seats?'; He laughed. Our seats were very good, but you couldn%26#39;t see her facial expressions very much. I did find out that just a couple rows back from us, and also in the sections to each side of us, the price drops down to the second highest price whereas where we were was included in the highest priced tickets. I don%26#39;t think you can talk to the box office about tickets for Bette. They refer you back to Ticketmaster for the actual purchase I think. I got mine off the online offering. I prefer to call the box office and have them help me with seating when I can. I saw Celine from the middle section, the mezzanine, and it was fine, too. I wouldn%26#39;t mind the balcony, but would prefer the orchestra or mezzanine if I could get one of those. Enjoy the show! It%26#39;s grand.

    Thanks for all the info.

I will try to get as close as I can, it would be nice to be able to make out her face/expressions.

This site has a seating plan for Caesars Colosseum. Your alphabetical section choices don%26#39;t make sense according to the seating plan which has numerical sections. We purchased R.Orchestra Section 6 Row C, seats 616 and 617.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi,

I found the detailed seating plan (where you can actually make out the individual seats) - this is useful if you (like me) are tall and you prefer to be on aisle seats. You can print it off and count along exactly where every seat is.

I%26#39;ve been supplying that same chart all year and until you said something, didn%26#39;t know you could click on the stars on the individual sections and see the view TO the stage!

    Thanks for the info!

    O or Ka?

We have the time to see just ONE show in Vegas. Narrowed down our choices to O or KA. Will be going with our 11 year old daughter. Which one? Is it best to book directly with them, I think they become available 4 months in advance.

    O or Ka?

I would definitely see ';O'; ahead of KÀ but if you%26#39;ve not seen a Cirque du Soleil show in Vegas then I%26#39;d personally recommend Mystère ahead of either of them, especially for an 11 year old. With CdS however, opinions are extremely subjective and a show that one person loves may easily be disliked by another.

';O'; is rarely if ever discounted and you should buy from the Bellagio box office as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. You can sometimes get promotional codes to use at the respective box offices to get cheaper tickets for KÀ and Mystère from sites like travelzoo.com and goldstar.com.

You%26#39;re correct about the four months timeframe for ticket sales.

    O or Ka?

I have seen Mystere (twice), O,Ka and Love. Mystere remains my favorite because I think it has the most WOW moments. Love was fantastic in every way but it isn%26#39;t a typical CDS-the emphasis is on the music not the acrobatics. O was very good -I just didn%26#39;t think it was as good as Mystere. I did not like Ka at all. The stage is great but the show itself did not hold my interest.

If I had to choose between the two I would definitely choose O. But with an 11 year old- I would seriously consider Mystere rather than either one of them.

You can always check these sites to see if any discounted tickets are available:

    www.smartervegas.com

    www.travelzoo.com

    www.goldstar.com

    www.broadwaybox.com

If none are available it is best to buy directly from the hotel website or call them and talk to someone at the box office.

I liked O a little better than Ka, Love is my favorite. The 11 year old will probably like O better, Ka has a scary feel to it and is less child-friendly. If price is an issue Ka tends to have more discounts available (check travelzoo.) I don%26#39;t think I%26#39;ve ever seen O discounted. Yes book directly with the box office, that%26#39;s the best way in my opinion.

I also would pick O over KA. We saw KA this past Tuesday and thought it was terrible compared to the others we have seen.

Wynn Resort Room or Palazzo Suite?????

At the same price, what you you suggest?

Wynn Resort Room or Palazzo Suite?????

I%26#39;ll let you know in a week!

Wynn Resort Room or Palazzo Suite?????

Never stayed at Palazzo, but have been to Wynn several times. Have you stayed at Wynn before?

I would pick Palazzo for the bigger room (the newest hotel), then your close enough to walk over and check out the Wynn.

Have reservations at both but am leaning toward the larger and newer rooms at Palazzo. People rave about the service at Wynn but I can%26#39;t imagine that there%26#39;d be much difference between the two. Reviews also say that the pool is nicer at Wynn.

The room at Palazzo is larher, with the living room area having couches, desk %26amp; chair w/ fax/printer, small dining table and chairs, TV (one of 3) in armoire.

At Wynn you have a desk and chair, small table, no living room area. The Wynn foyer is a little wider and the closet doors open to the foyer. At the Palazzo the closet doors open into the bedroom part.

The bathrooms are close to the same size and layout - Palazzo a little larger with a vanity table - the Wynn does not have this. The Wynn sink vanities have an area between them that is dropped down, whereas at The palazzo the counter height is the same across. Tub, shower and toilet areas almost identical. Each has a TV.

Both rooms have auto window coverings, the decor at Wynn is a little more modern. Palazzo has more room for stuff, if you need it. Both beds are comfortable.

Wynn has better VP, a smaller casino, Palazzo casino has poor VP, larger aisles.

Service at both is impeccable, Wynn is smaller, has fewer dining options especially at the low end of the budget - also has Alex, one of our favorites, we sometimes dine 3 or 4 nights in a row, and Tableau and The Country Clib. Palazzo has more low budget dining options if you count what is available at The V and the canal shops - also has Bouchon, another fav and we dine here every trip.

Since the walkway over the road is conveneint you can get between the 2 easily.

you can%26#39;t wrong at either place.

Overall, I like the rooms at the Palazzo best, as they have the two living areas (bedroom and sunken living room) and they%26#39;re newer. However, I prefer everything else better at Wynn - service, pool, restaurants. The Wynn is so luxurious but in such a comfortable, unpretentious way, plus it has a very unique feel to it, whereas the Palazzo was gorgeous but came off a little cold and generic. So you%26#39;ll just have to decide which factors are more important to you. Hope that helps!

IMO, you can%26#39;t go wrong with either, I love the Wynn %26amp; the staff is fantastic there but the Palazzo rooms are newer %26amp; a little larger. It%26#39;s just preference %26amp; which one meets you criteria in a great stay. If it was me, %26amp; my lst time, I would go with Palazzo since it newer, but the Wynn is very elegant in its own way.

The two times we stayed at the Wynn our resort side room also had a small sofa and coffee table. It felt spacious enough for two of us with a king size bed, plenty of room for luggage, etc.

The vanity area in the bathroom is the dropped down area between the sinks and is very usable (if this was not clear in the previous post).

Thanks for the input, am going with Palazzo. The larger room was my deciding factor and my wife liked the idea of being upstairs from the shops... Will be headed to the airport a week from right now.

I will be watching for your TR. I have a week booked at Palazzo starting on 10/19. If you do any sports betting, I would be interested in hearing about the new sports book in the Palazzo. Have fun.

i prefer wynns my wife prefers palazzo

Staying and dining at both a few times

I still prefer the conceirge fortuna suites at the palazzo to relax during a break from gambling,

BRIDGEFAN1 has discribed both hotels as well as can be for a person who has stayed at both hotels many a time

GOOD LUCK both are beautiful properties and you can%26#39;t go wrong on either
