Hi
looks likely that i%26#39;ll now be driving to Vegas from LA...i want to spend 4 days in vegas itself before heading for grand canyon etc etc...The question is do i hire a car just for the dat to get me from LA to vegas and then take it back - spend 4 days without a car...and then hire a separate one to do the canyon etc part of teh trip... or wuld having a car available in vegas be sensible and hence worthwhile keeping the one we pick up in LA for teh whole journey?
Thanks for any advice!
Do i need a car in vegas?
Hi
We always have a car. For us we find it very usefull. You can park anywhere for free so that%26#39;s a good start. You can visit off strip hotels with ease for dining etc. Get downtown and park there for free as long as you validate your ticket or valet park at any hotel for just the cost of the tip. Then of course you can get to the outlet malls easily and shop till you drop.....

Do i need a car in vegas?
I don%26#39;t need a car in Vegas. I like to drink and I like to walk so the car becomes a nuisance.
no, you don%26#39;t, it is all personal chocie and what suits you.
if you use a rental the driver can%26#39;t have alcohol, the strip traffic is HORRIBLE, you don;t know the roads, etc etc.
this is a much discussed topic and truly comes down to what works for you. i used to always rent a car - up until about 15 years ago when driving became a hassle. we now use limos and taxis if walking not right. cost has nothing to do with the decision - convenience does.
that said, based on your plan, it may be just a cost-effective to keep the car, check rates and compare both plans. if you have the car and park it at your hotel, use it in combination with other transportation if needed. factor in the hassle of returning and renting again - and the lost time. it may be easier to have one rental and keep the car parked at your hotel.
we are usually off the strip often during our trip, a limo or taxi serves us.
so no right or wrong answer - compare prices, how much traveling you would need it for and decide what works for you
You don%26#39;t need a car in Las Vegas if you are mostly going to stay on the strip. In fact many prefer not dealing with the traffic, and like to drink so are too smart to mix with driving.
But there is one thing you should check out: It actually may be cheaper to rent a car for 7-8 days than 4. Weekly rates are often better than daily. So it may pay to keep the car and just park it when in Las Vegas.
With your situation I would keep the car the whole trip. You can still leave the car at the hotel if you want to use other transportation. Don%26#39;t drive the strip at night. Way to busy.
We%26#39;ve done both Vegas with and without a car. We find if we%26#39;re spending most of our time on the Strip then we never use it or take it out of the garage once. But because you are using it before and after, I would probably just keep it for those 4 days for simplicity%26#39;s sake. Be sure to use the valet, it%26#39;s much easier than self park at most casinos.
Thanks everyone! great advice. I%26#39;ve looked at prices and it seems it would be simpler and more cost effective to keep the car - even if its just parked up for the 4 days! great news that the car parking is free (bar vallet tips) - hoping to stay at the bellagio.
Now its just the age old dilema of what to pack! vegas and the canyons is half the trip - the other half is LA and hawaii so i think i%26#39;ll be taking beach and autumn/winter clothes!!!
Thanks all!
you don%26#39;t need a car, but if you don%26#39;t have a set budget then you myswell keep the car, it is handy, though there is lots of public transit, but if you%26#39;re anything like me and impatient, the bus is not the way to go!
Hi
Don%26#39;t know your itinery but we have been to the Canyon twice, once via Kingman and in at the main entrance but this year we left via the Cameron exit and headed noth and took the road via Page back to Vegas. We did this because we wanted to visit Monument Valley. The point I was making though is that the north but longer route which would also take you directly past Zion is a much more scenic drive, if you have the time.

I always rent a car because I don%26#39;t want to deal with cab fares, hikes to a monorail station or wait for a slow and crowded bus. You won%26#39;t be taking it from casino to casino but you can use it to get to a general area of the strip. As someone said- parking is free- just tip when you valet park. The Bellagio self park is easy to use (as is the Mirage and TI) but some are not so easy and many people prefer to always valet park. The strip traffic can be a hassle but you can get a good map and use the side and back roads to avoid the strip. Many hotel garages can be accessed using these roads and staying off the strip:
